There are certain possessions which cannot be shipped with your household goods because they are hazardous, perishable or irreplaceable! The following lists are general guidelines regarding these items that may require some pre-planning.

You should empty refrigerators and freezers at least 24 hours prior to leaving, unplug them, and leave the doors open for drying. Wipe the insides with a white vinegar and water mix, and then dry. To absorb odors and moisture, place coffee grounds in a small stocking (nylon) bag and place in both the refrigerator and freezer sections. Do the same for deep freeze chests. Any refrigerated or frozen foods, plants, or living things are considered perishable since they could spoil or die in transit. Please pre-plan accordingly, and see our Moving with Plants section.

Any item that is of personal importance or sentimental value should be taken with you in your vehicle. You may also be able to box, insure and mail these items to your new address if space in your vehicle is limited, or you are flying. These items would be troublesome if the shipment was late or the items lost.
Open containers with liquids (shampoo, liquid soap, liquor, perfume, etc.) are not recommended for shipment because leaking can damage or ruin other items.
