GREEN MOVE

There are over 43 million Americans moving this year. Keep in mind there are several things you can do to lessen the impact on Mother Earth! Here are some environmentally conscious hints:

  • Disposable boxes and packing materials create a lot of waste. Consider packing some, if not all, of your possessions in rubber tubs. They are available in a large variety of sizes, and can be reused in your home for storage of seasonal items (ornaments and clothing), toys, tools, memorabilia, etc. The boxes you do purchase can be donated to someone else who is moving, to schools, or recycled.
  • Donate items such as outdoor items, books, toys, and clothes to your favorite charity, school or library.
  • Properly and responsibly dispose of hazardous materials (See Non-Allowables) such as gasoline, batteries, fertilizer, liquid bleach, paint thinner, etc. Some municipalities offer pickup service, and local vendors may environmentally dispose of these materials for a small fee. It is very harmful to just throw them away or pour them out!
  • Plan your grocery shopping such that you do not have many perishables come moving day. If you do have a surplus or refrigerated or frozen food, give it away to a friend or neighbor. Also, if you do not wish to pack several heavy boxes of canned goods, donate them to a local food shelter.
